A  Singular Legacy:  Starrett, Collins, Pargellis, and Bridges

The Hounds of the Baskerville (sic) was founded 75 years ago. But why? What were the elements that came together during some of the darkest days of World War II to produce a Sherlock Holmes society in Chicago? The answer can be found in the four Founding Fathers: Vincent Starrett, Charles Collins, Horace Bridges and Stanley Pargellis. Each of these men contributed something special, a singular legacy, which we continue to enjoy to this day.To understand our roots as Hounds, we will dive deep into the lives of these four men. Along the way, we’ll explore literary Chicago during the early years of the previous century, take in a meal at Schlogl’s, and learn what Adolph Hitler, Clarence Darrow, the linotype machine and a quarter of a million books have to do with our shared past.

 

In addition, as part of our 75th-anniversary celebration, we have produced A History of The Hounds of the Baskerville (sic) 1943 – 2017 that will make its debut at our October 6th meeting. This publication includes the late John Nieminski’s original work covering the first 40-years of Hounds history and a 35-year update by Master Hound and author, Donald J. Terras. The book also includes a Good Old Index by Jon Lellenberg and a transcribed lecture by the late Master Hound, Robert J. Mangler: “On Vincent Starrett, The Hounds, The BSI, and Sherlockian Chicago.”

Julie McKuras and Monica Schmidt will also present On the Track of the Hounds: History Uncovered.
